Changing transparency of object colors - does not print as changed

I need to lighten several objects before sending the file to the printer.
When I increase the transparency, this shows up in the file, but not in print
preview, and it prints the original darker tone. Any suggestions on what I
might do to apply changes, etc. in order to get the changes to stick when
printing?

Select the object, right-click, save as picture, save as a hi-res tif or png.
Insert the new image into your publication.
