Chapter Headings/TOC

Hi, I am trying to format my document, which includes numbered chapters,
appendices and so on. The layout required is quite specific, and I am hoping
to automate as much as possible. I have included a sample of the layout below
(<1>...</1> indicates the text needs to be of font type 1, whatever that font
should be)

<1>Abstract</1>
....
<1>Acknowledgements</1>
....
<1>Contents</1>
<2>Abstract............i</2>
<2>Acknowledgements..........i</2>
<2>1 Introduction..........1</2>
<3>1.1 Below the Intro</3>
<2>2 Another Chapter</2>
<2>APPENDIX A Other Stuff</2>
<3>A.1 Some more stuff</3>
....
<4>CHAPTER 1</4>
<1>Introduction</1>
....
<5>1.1 Below the Intro</5>
....
<4>CHAPTER 2</4>
<1>Another Chapter</1>
....
<4>APPENDIX A</4>
<1>Other Stuff</1>
....
<5>A.1 Some more stuff</5>
....

My first problem is that I do not know if it is possible to define the
"CHAPTER X\nTitle" bit as a single style.
And if it is, is it possible to get the table of contents to automatically
display how I need it to? (ie. without "CHAPTER", and on 1 line)

You can do most, but I think not all, of what you want.

To define your chapter headings as a single style, set up the numbering for
the style by clicking Customize, then entering the number format as CHAPTER
1\n. Use Shift-Enter for the newline character. Then click Font to format
the 'Chapter n' part.

Add your TOC as normal: the newline character is automatically removed
(unless you add the \x switch), so the TOC entry will show on one line. But
I don't know if there's any way to suppress the 'Chapter'.

Note that you can use two styles: one for "Chapter #" and one for the
text of the chapter. Then include the latter style in the table of
contents, and format the corresponding TOC style to be numbered.
