Click on doc opens Word but not the doc?

Office 2K3 on XP Pro box. Odd thing happening--if I click on a
document in windows explorer, it brings up Word just fine, but the
document does NOT open. However, I can do a File/Open and it opens
just fine. I did run a repair on Office and rebooted, all to no
avail.

On a related note, and quite possibly the cause of this problem, when
I DO open a doc manually or even start a new one, I cannot select
anything in it using my mouse. I can scroll using the middle wheel,
and use the keyboard, and even select toolbar items, but the left
button will NOT work in the text area. And before you ask :) yes, I
tried 3 different mice, one of them brand new. It all works properly
everywhere except in Word!

Sounds like an association or something else is wanky somewhere, but
it all LOOKS OK to my less than discerning eye. Anyone run into this
or have a solution? It's probably something simple/stupid :) but I'll
be darned if I know how to fix it.
