Clicking selects more files than I want

Somehow I pressed a key and now when I try to click on a single folder or
file, all files or folders above the click are selected. Want to get back to
clicking on only a single file or folder.

If you turned on Sticky Keys this could happen. See Control panel,
Accessibility Options to turn it off. Otherwise the shift key is stuck.
Try a reboot.
