clipboard not saving clips

what do i have to do to get clipboard to save clips? eg, i want to collect
several clips from an email or contact, then paste into various fields in
another contact. i can't figure out what makes clipboard decide to start
saving.

i wasn't aware that time was a factor. actually, oddly, since writing the
first post, it has started working, using ctrl-c and menu 'copy'. the only
thing i changed was telling it 'show status near taskbar when copying'. i
had no idea that would, or did, make a difference.
