clipboard will not clear

One of the users I support said that when she tries to copy text from a Word
document into our client database program (accessed with remote desktop),
text that she previously copied appears there rather than the most recently
copied text. This only happens in Word and she is able to copy and paste
text from emails without a problem. I recommended that she clear the
clipboard in Word before she copies the new text. She did this, but when she
copies the new text the clipboard always says "1 of 24," even though the most
recently copied text is all that is visible. When she goes into the remote
desktop session and tries to paste, older data from the clipboard appears. I
read one post that said to search for and delete the contents of the msohtml
folder in the temp folder, but I don't see it in c:\temp or c:\windows\temp

OK - I figured out that the clipboard holds 24 items maximum and that's why
my user is gettting the 1 of 24 message. However, the problem of old data
from the clipboard pasting, even when the clipboard has been cleared,
persists.

I have seen that behavior here from time to time in Word 2003 and Windows
XP. Once it happens, the only things that seem to "fix" it are rebooting or
logging out and logging back on. As it happened sporadically, I never was
able to determine a cause... except that it eventually stopped. So, it might
have been fixed by an Office or Windows update.

I made sure her machine had all the Windows and Office updates and told her
to reboot, but the problem continued. I also told her to try opening her
Word docs in Word Pad and copy the text from there, but when she pastes into
the remote desktop session it's older text - not the selection that she most
recently copied.

So, you're saying that when she reboots, the clipboard already has text in
it from the previous session? If that's the case, I'm wondering if he might
have a clipboard utility/add-in that's running interference.

Hi Jim,

Remote desktop setups can be tricky :) The Office clipboard stores content in the Windows %temp% folder. See if using Start=>Run
and typing %temp% (which may take you to a different folder) and clearing the content/folders there then restarting the apps make a
difference.

As Herb pointed out there are also 3rd party apps (perhaps something loading on startup) that can also use stored content for their
'clipboards' and perhaps that's appearing (not being deleted) due to permissions?

I'll have her try deleting the contents on the the c:\windows\temp folder,
but I didn't see a \content\folders subdirectory in that folder on my
computer. The issue may be with remote desktop rather than the clipboard.
When she does copy and paste between applications on her local machine (say,
between Word and Notepad) the pasted data reflects what was copied. It's
only when she copies from the local computer (usually text in Word) and
pastes to the database app running on the server that she gets old clipboard
data.

I don't know that data is remaining on the clipboard after a restart. I
just mentioned the restart after the update install to be thorough (-:
