Combine shows and still preserve their backgrounds?

Is it possible to merge 2 or more PPT slide shows without
having them all take on the background of the first show?
Which is what happens when you copy slides from one show
and paste them into another. The pasted slides take on
the background of the other show.

It is possible. If you are using PPT 2002 or later, it is trivial. If you
are using an older version, it requires linking or some other workaround.
