Comparing baseline and projected finish dates

In my environment, we are asked to provide status of a project based on how
many days ahead/behind the baseline we are at a given point. I was wondering
if there is a quick way to determine/calculate this figure. I have tried
several things, but wanted a sanity check on the best method.

Project info
I have set up the project so that everything rolls up to a single summary
line. Based on specific constraints, links, and durations inputed, the dates
are scheduled by Project. I have established a baseline and we are tracking
completion of individual tasks under the actual start and finish time columns.

Actually, what you need is right out of the box. In the tools menu,
options, the view tab, on the lower right hand side of the page theres a
check box for "Show Project Summary Task." Turn that on and you get a
global rollup of the whole project automatically as the "zero'th" task.
Before starting work I presume you saved a baseline. After updating
progress, switch the Gantt chart table to the Variance table and "tada!"
you've got it right there.

hi Alan,

on the MS Project menu bar click VIEW > TABLES > MORE TABLES > VARIANCE.
This will give you the schedule variance. The Variance field shows the
calculated difference between planned and scheduled information.

Haris
