comparing documents without merging them

How can I compare documents without merging them in Word 2003? I teach
Office 2003 and compare the students' documents against my answer key to
grade their papers. Compare and merge is very confusing because I don't want
to merge the documents. I only want to see their errors.

You can compare without merging. The trick is to open the right document
first (it always takes me two tries, but I believe you would open your
master first). You will then see variances marked in the same way as tracked
changes (insertions and deletions) in the second document.
