Compatibility with Word 2003: Track Changes User ID

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I edit documents using Word 2003 and MacWord 2008.

I often have documents with track changes created in Word 2003 using a single word User ID (e.g., "XY"). If I try to work on that document in MacWord 2008 using the same User ID (so that track changes are deleted without double strikeouts), I run into trouble because Mac Word wants User IDs consisting of both first and last names (e.g., "Smith, Joe" rather than "Joe").

Does anybody know of an easy workaround, such as a null character I could insert for the first or last name? Am I missing something simple here?

Since Mac Word doesn't support Visual Basic, I don't have the option of doing a search and replace on the User ID referenced in the Word 2003 file.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Paul:

There is no work-around for that one. On Windows, and Mac, Word
distinguishes users by their fully-qualified login name (i.e. Including the
server name and domain name).

So even if you set up a User ID on your Mac with a name exactly the same as
your Windows login name, I think Mac Word would still see them as different
users (it should!!).

You can, of course, use VBA in Word 2003 to set the user IDs the same when
you get back to the office.

Hope this helps

Thanks John. Since the UserID names on Word 2003 are arbitrary, it's probably best to convert to a two word UserID before bringing the file into Word 2008.

Hi Paul:

I don't "think" that will work, because I believe Word uses the Machine
login and domain name to distinguish users.

I don't think you can fool it by using the same name.

When you login, the authentication server (which may be your local machine)
stores an "Authentication Ticket". Word takes that token and records it
against the User Name you specify in Word's options.

However, I think you will find that when you come back to the Mac, Word can
tell the two of "you" apart, because you have different Authentication
Tokens.

I could be wrong: It's a long time since I last looked at this.

Cheers
