Conditional Task

D

Day Tripper

Greetings!
Here's my scenario - I'm moving a some servers. If all
goes okay I want to "Go Live" at a specified time - Say
6:00 PM on a Saturday. If for some reason I have to
completely restore a server (which could take 24 hours) I
will have a "Restore" task. If a resore is required I
then want the "Go Live" task to start at 6:00 PM on Sunday
after the "Restore" task is complete.

Is there a way to conditionaly set the "Go Live" the date
with a start date based on the whether or not
the "Restore" task was required. Or do I simply have to
manually set up two "Go Live" tasks.

Thanks.

Day,
Why not simply include a "Restore server" task into the plan with the
"Go Live" milestone as its successor? Initially set the Duration for the
restore task to "0". If it is not needed, the "Go Live" time will be on
Saturday. If a server needs to be restored, set its Duration to 24 hours
(I'm assuming a 24 hour calendar).

Another method might be to go ahead and include the "Restore Server"
task as a full 24 hour task. Initially leave it out of the task linkage
logic but if it is needed, insert it into the logic flow.

Hope this helps.

IMHO, a project schedule is just that - a plan of what you are actually
going to do. So how to handle the contingency scenario? Decide whether it
is most likely that you'll need to restore one or more servers or not and
build your plan based on that assumption, but with the understanding that
you may have to modify it later if circumstnaces evolve differently. Same
sort of idea as planning to drive from point A to point B via C but with an
alternate route through D in mind if road construction forces a detour
enroute.
