Conflict between Word '97 & Word 2002 on XP machine?

I have both Word '97 & '02 working and installed on my XP machine.

Whenever I try to open word documents, the '02 installer launches.

This even when I try to open a word '97 document, as well as after
having ensure that the .doc file types for C: and all subfolders are to
open with word '97.

Thoughts?

Open Word 97 and then use File|Open and navigate to the document.

Office XP (Word 2002) writes entries to the registry so it becomes the
default program, even when you change the file association. Office 2003
behaves better.
