Contact field on Contact form

What is the benefit of the Contact field on the Contact form?

You can add notes to the field such as where you met the contact
(conference), the company affiliation, ICQ or MSN ID, notes about
preferences, such as allergic to shellfish, and the list goes on.

This answer indicates the purpose of the Notes field. I am asking about the
purpose of the Contacts field on the New Contact form; it seems to be for
linking one Contact to another Contact, however what are the benefits of
linking Contacts? Doe
