How do I convert Word 5.0B files to Office 2003? I have just recently upgraded my computer and can no longer use Word 5.0B.

What happens when you try to open the files in Word 2003?

When I open a file, I get long strings of graphic characters between words and text. It takes a great deal of time to go through my documents to remove these characters. Also, I have many chemical formulas in my text and all the superscripts and subscripts appear as normal characters

Maybe the easies thing to do is re-load Word 5 onto your machine and
save into RTF, Word 2 or some other format that your Word 2003 can
recognize. Experiment.
Also check to ensure that you installed the Word 5 filters into your
Word 2003.
From the specs and by inspection of the File Save/As menu where the
filter for Word 5 is present, Word 2003 should be able to open Word 5
files.

Thanks Rob for your help. I was told, although I haven't tried it, that I can't install MS word 5.0B on my computer because Word 5 is a DOS program and won't run under XP. Otherwise I would convert the files to RTF. I was running Word 5 under windows 95, but now I've up graded to a new computer with XP. I like it, but I'm running into some difficulties with my old programs. Thanks for your suggestion.

Older DOS Programs will work in XP. Try it. See what happens. Install
via the Compatibility wizard.
Or find a Windows 95 machine that has Word 5, or you can put Word 5 on it.
I don't agree that Word 2003 *should* be able to deal with Word 5 files.
Word 2003 does what it does. Word 5 is very old. The fact is that
with old software you have to sometimes jump through hoops. Things
changed very fast in that era and impossible to keep everything alive
forever.

I do have access to a 95 machine and I can put Word 5 on it. I really don't expect new software to be downward compatible for ever. At some point a line has to be drawn. I was just hoping that there may have been a way to read these files. Thanks for the help, Rob .

Shared\TextConv\Doswrd32.cnv. If not, grab it from the link on my web page
