converting from Word 2000

Just got a new computer with Windows XP and Word 2003. I copied lots of my old Word 2000 files, with the extension .doc to my new computer. The problem is that Word 2003 doesn't seem to be able to find or recognize any of them! The only way I have found to open them so far is to use the Search function to look for .doc files, copy these files, and then they are recognized. Very cumbersome! What's wrong?
