Do you know what version you used to create the files you can't open?

Also, are you getting some kind of error message when you try to open them now?

Thanks Steve
its version v.x on my old powerbook (1987-2001)
The error message reads
cannot open file xxx it may be corrupt, in use, not a type recognised by ppt or may not match the internal format of the file.
Any clues? some of the ppt have been created up till 2007 or maybe later on the other computer...
Your help is very much appreciated!
cheers
Emma

Oops. I meant which *PowerPoint* version was used to create the files?

Also, how did the files get from the old computer to the new?
Is the old computer still hanging around the house, remniscing about the good old
days?

I am declaring myself as no expert in this field more and more! The version used was powerpoint for mac v.x (this is the only identifying info I can find on it), I bought this software (must have been office for mac) when I bought the machine. I still have it but it is about 8 years old and I upgraded to make sure it didnt die with all my material (also the powecord is fraying).

I bought an external harddrive from the macshop and took it across with that. The new machine (now 2 years old, mind) recently was upgraded by a mac specialist near me (coffs harbour) and has leopard and runs powerpoint for mac 12.1.2.
any closer?
thanks
Emma

Yes, thanks Emma.

OK, PowerPoint X (as I recall, more or less the same as the previous PPT 98 but updated for OS X).

All versions from '98 through 2004 share the same file format, openable by 2008 (though some really old PPT
files might not be). 2008 should be able to open your files.

Try two things if you would:

Copy an example file or to to the external hard drive from your old computer again.
Be CERTAIN that you drag the hard drive's icon to the trash before disconnecting it.

Then when you move the hard drive to the new computer, drag the files from it to the desktop or to a folder on
the computer's hard drive rather than opening from the external drive.

Give that a shot, let us know what happens.
