Copying data from one file to another

I was wondering if there is a way to copy the data that i had inserted into
the task usage chart to another file. It turns out that the Project file i
used was being replaced by a new one with more tasks and new estimates. I
think it would be better to use the new file rather than trying to update the
old one. I had inserted the amount of work each person had put daily into a
task and would prefer to copy this data rather than re-insert it. Thank you
for any help you can offer.

JKarchner,
Depending on how many resources and tasks you have there are various
approaches that can be used. If there aren't to many, you might just use
a simple copy and paste of the timescaled data. Just make sure the
timescale in both projects is the same.

Another approach might be to create a static consolidation of the files.
This is a manual merge operation and could get a little tricky so work
carefully. First, delete the old tasks from the new file (this is the
tricky part). Next create a static consolidation by opening the new file
and going to Insert/Project. Select the old file as the file to be
inserted and uncheck the "link to Project" option in the lower right
corner of the Insert Project window. Then hit "insert". Make any
necessary adjustments to the outline using drag and drop and you should
be all set. You could also use the default dynamic consolidation and
then unlink the subproject after the consolidation is complete but I
don't see any real advantage to this alternate.

A third approach is to use VBA. Of course this option is only valid if
you are comfortable using VBA in Project or know someone who is.

Hope this helps.
