trevor,
How exactly are you copying the dates? Why do you think they are not
copying accurately? Note that Project dates are based on the current
project work calendar while dates in Excel are based on a 24 hour day.
And why would you want to copy the finish dates first?

Here is what I suggest. Once you have the data set up appropriately in
Excel (i.e. dates in Excel columns and tasks in Excel rows), all you
will need to do is to set up an import map (File/Open with Files of type
set for Excel Workbook). You can read more about import maps in the
Project help file. Of course, Project will not accept a blank in the
normal Start and Finish fields.

some of them are wrong.

trevor,
The word "wrong" can mean many things. As I said, it is very likely that
the dates will not match exactly due to the difference in the way
Project and Excel define a calendar. Can you give a discrete example of
what is not "matching" and under what circumstances?

You mention that "the Excel format is in the form it is". What exactly
does that mean? Perhaps you are expecting Project to do something that
it is not designed to do. Project is a scheduling application, Excel is
not and dates by themselves do NOT make a schedule.
