Corrupt attatchments since upgrade to Tiger

Removing Little Snitch (using the LS uninstaller) did the trick! No
more corrupted files!! Tested on Word .doc's and PDF using Windows
encoding and NO compression. I never used compression before (and I do
have StuffIt 9.0.2 installed). So, IMHO, Little Snitch was the problem.
Thank God for whoever discovered the solution!

I'm sorry--I've been holding this back for a couple days now....

Off-topic rant not addressed to anyone in particular....

Shouldn't a program that *hooks into the kernel* and is *designed* to
interfere with the normal operation of other programs be an immediate
candidate for testing whenever something goes wrong, particularly a
network-related something?

I cannot *believe* it took people this long to start testing Little Snitch.
Especially after the information that it worked with a safe boot was posted.

Thanks guys. I have had this problem since installing Tiger. Last
night, prompted by recent posts, I decided to delete all NetBarrier
files, and then went so far as to delete all Intego related files,
which I think just covered their own update software.

Sent out a couple of test attachments and hey presto - problem solved.

Hope this might work for others and point to a reason why it all
happened.

What would we do without Groups!

Yes. Expect a new version of Little Snitch next week (week of June 5).
However, I have no expectation that a new release will necessarily fix
a problem that may be in Tiger - particularly if NetBarrier
installations cause the same problem. The new release of LS was not
expressly linked to a fix for the corruption problem with Entourage.

Has anyone contacted Intego about this? NetBarrier would be the
culprit on my system.

Hmmmm - i posted 2 weeks ago that little snitch was the culprit on one
machine but not the other - i do not have net barrier and entourage is

I missed your original post, but there is a new Little Snitch with
fixes for Tiger. I installed it and it seems to behave. The previous
version had duplicate rules after I upgraded to Tiger and kernel panicked
when I tried to delete the duplicates. I also use Entourage, but I haven't
as yet experienced any corruption. I upgraded to 2004 at the same time I
upgraded the OS with a clean install and my database moved without incident.

The only problem I still have is getting Entourage, PGP 9.0.1, and SSH
to work together.

ok - it's now a decent hour and yes it is indeed the littlesnitch.kext
file ausing the problem - guess i'm not used to searches not including
system folder files or uninstallers not uninstalling everything.
Cheers to everyone looking for the solution!

Did a little experimenting tonight by installing the latest version of
Little Snitch 1.2b4. After installation, some files were corrupted, but
not all. For example a PDF was totally corrupted and could not be
opened by Preview or Acrobat Reader. A JPG file could be opened with
Preview, but the image had a small amount of distortion that I can only
explain as bad pixels. A Word .doc went through fine. So in my
experience, the latest version of Little Snitch still has issues and
seems to be root of the problems (other than NetBarrier, but I do not
use that). I ran the Little Snitch uninstaller and resent the same
files without any corruption problems.

Did you contact the Little Snitch developer?

He seems to be pretty responsive for bug fixing...

Please can you clarify - did you run the uninstaller before installing the
new version, or did you install the new version over the old one.

Having now run the uninstaller, can you install the new version and send
attachments?

Read 10.4.2 issue with saving attachments with read-only resource forks -
maybe it's a tiger thing

Installed 1.2b4 over previous, still corrupt PDF files.

If I encode Apple Double and send to myself, it's corrupted.
If I encode for Unix and send to myself, it is not corrupt.

Therefore, how can it just be Little Snitch?
This lend credence that it has to do with resource forks, yes Barry?

Well if LS can fix the issue, then maybe M$ and Intego can get their
act together as well....

Sending pdfs through entourage on tiger would corrupt everytime to p
and mac end users. Mac mail could send a pdf without corruption. Afte
reading the posts about snitch I downloaded the latest snitch upgrad
(1.2b5) without uninstalling and the pdfs are fine now. Thanks to all

So I emailed Intego about the issues with NB and here is the response I
got:
We are currently investigating this problem and the part that
NetBarrier may
play in exacerbating it. The issue does appear to be directly related
to
Entourage when running on Tiger, as there are many reports of those
without
NetBarrier installed having the same issue.

We have been working to reproduce this problem in our labs and possibly
develop a workaround in our product for this issue. It's a bug in Mac
OS X
10.4. We have been told that Apple is working on a fix to the TCP/IP
stack
that will address this problem. I just hope it will be included with
10.4.2.

We are certainly sorry that this problem has arisen and the
inconvenience it
has caused you.

Recommendations are:

Use the Microsoft AutoUpdate application and apply any updates that are
available. Some have reported that even though they were positive that
they
had applied all all of the updates, they reappeared as being necessary
to
install and after installation the problem was solved.

Make sure that you have installed all of the updates and security
patches
for Mac OS X 10.4.1.

While I hate doing the obvious Tech Support move. You should try
installing
from the latest installer, NetBarrier X3 version 10.3.6, If you have
not
already. You can download from this link:

http://www.integodownload.com/en/nbx.html

First use the uninstall function of the installer, and after a restart,
reinstall from this latest installer.

Do you have the Built-in firewall on as well? Try toggling this on and
off,
testing in each position.

Is there anything mentioned as being blocked in NetBarrier's log at the
time
of connecting and sending the attachment?

We will keep you informed of any developments that occur in our testing
of
this issue.

Thank you for choosing Intego.

hope 10.4.2 fixes the issue!!!!

U

uncle bunkie

Yes Martin,

It probably does not have anything to do with OS X Tiger since Apple's
Mail works fine.

Keep this in mind. When I removed NetBarrier, the issue diasapeared.
Reinstall NetBarrier, problem reappears. And the problem only exisits
on Entourage, not Mail. I think rather than looking at Apple (the easy
target) Intego and Microsoft should figure this one out.

I agree with you but at least Intego seems to be working with Apple on
this one and trying to figure out something on their own. It's taking
a while but at least something is happening...
