Corrupt attatchments since upgrade to Tiger

M

MDG

I'm just coming onto this thread because after going to Tiger and
Office 04 clean installs last week i just hit the problem.

UUencode sure doesn't work for .doc,

But as mentioned by somone else attaching the same file multiple time
does work.
The first is obviously shortened (by a percentage perhaps?) 435k->434
but the second and third identical .docs with diff names are fine.

I tried the UNIX encoding (UUEncode) approach and the file(s) is still
corrupted when received via my alternate/test account. The UNIX
encoding was also combined with no compression. File sent was a PDF
file from scanned documents of approx 96KB.

Environment:
-Entourage 2004 11.1.1 patch applied (database recently rebuilt)
-Mac OS 10.4.1
-PB AL 15" 1.25GHz 2GB RAM
-SMTP server is Kerio 6.0.10. SMTP relay through SBC. Alternate account
rec'd using Webmail (?).

I think it's worth knowing that ever since upgrading to Tiger, every
time i restart my machine, a Recovered Files folder is present in the
trash on reboot. This is created by Entourage so it might be a clue to
something...

I confirm what Martin says: a recovered files folder appears on any
start of my computer (after using Entourage)

When I removed the kext for Little Snitch the problem went away! Attachments
that are sent are no longer corrupt! The kext was located in
/System/Library/Extentions. You will also need to remove the preference pane
as the program needs the kext to run. Either way I hope someone from
Microsoft and from Objective Development Software see this post and
investigate further.

-Now a happy user!

There is no official non-beta version of LittleSnitch that is
Tiger-compatible. What version were you using? m.

Unfortunately, I have never used or installed LittleSnitch and have the
Entourage problem intermittently. Currently, I can send again. A few
days ago, I couldn't. I'm thinking it's humidity or stress ;)

I am pleased to report that for 41.81N -87.68W, the cause of the
corrupt attachment problem is the combination of humidity above 43% and
winds blowing from the West to NW at or above 5 mph, when combined with
Tiger 10.4.1, Entourage 11.1.0 (patch 11.1.1), and hunger measured at
4.7 on a 10.0 scale, during daylight hours. I'm not sure what causes it
at night.

I'm trying Joachim's
(http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@@.68b06bc9/5) approach to
use a sacrificial first attachment (using a 1 x 1 pixel GIF file) and
then attaching the legitimate files as attachments. I will report back
how this works.

I just tried the 'remove Little Snitch' solution and it worked for me
as well. I've now sent 5 emails in a row with attachments and non have
been corrupted. That didn't happen before. More like 1 out of 5 got
through un-corrupted. I will test further, but anyone running LS might
want to remove it and and test for themselves.

Has anyone set Entourage to ³Work Offline², composed an email, added an
attachment and ³sent² it to be stored in their Outbox?

If you look at the email that is holding in the Outbox ‹ is the attachment
good?

My thought is that the message is actually being sent before the I/O has
been completed. This thought harkens back to my former systems programming
days. I¹ll admit those were large boxes and the technology has changed ‹
but . .

I have not yet upgraded to 10.4.x on my laptop because of this issue.

I have a colleague that has the same problem and he is not running
Little Snitch (he doesn't know what it is).

While Little Snitch might be involved, the problem may be multi-modal.
That is, more than one cause or complicated by different other
processes running.

If Little Snitch were the cause, wouldn't it make sense that HTTP
uploads would be affected? And FTP uploads?

Uninstalled Little Snitch had no effect (positive/negative) on my
system's performance.

Upon request from Michael the Entourage tester, I, too, found that
uninstalling LS eliminated my corrupt attachment (based on very small
quantity of test email transmittals) and have reported same.

LS v1.2b3
Mac OS 10.4.1
Entourage 11.1.0 (11.1.1 patch applied)

Yes! I do.

Yes!... sure!

No!...

If I "draw" the € encoded € message from the Outbox to the Desktop and
send it with Entourage X, the attachment is intact!

With Entourage 2004, the attachment is corrupted!

The bug is only in the sending, not in the encoding!

And more:

If I remove the kext of Little Snitch (version 1.2b3 Tiger "compatible")
(in /System/library/Extensions)

and € reboot € (important!)

Little Snitch is down but the Entourage 2004's attachments aren't
corrupted! Never.

If I replace the Little Snitch's .kext in /System/library/Extensions,
and start Little Snitch, the attachments are corrupted again!...

Hope it helps!

Tiger 10.4.1 french and Little Snitch 1.2b3 (the last)

Has anyone sent a note to the developers of Little Snitch and gotten a
response on this?

I never used LS but still had the same corruption problem. An article

this time it's NetBarrier.

Seems like it's a problem with some sort of networking "interaction"
that's the same between LittleSnitch and NetBarrier...

How many of you have your firewall enabled and how many do not. Could it be
something this simple? (doubtful I know, but hey...who knows)

I have my firewall enabled (but no NetBarrier or Little Snitch). No
problems with attachments.
