Corrupt attatchments since upgrade to Tiger

What EXACTLY is the difference between safe-mode and a normal system
startup (I kow some kernel-extentions woun't be started - but WHICH
ones?)
I was wondering that too...

Here's a little more info from Apple (updated 28apr05)
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392>
Quoting:

Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when
troubleshooting. Safe Mode is the state Mac OS X is in after a Safe Boot.

Starting up into Safe Mode does three things to simplify the startup and
operation of your computer:
â–ª It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
â–ª It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in
/System/Library/Extensions).
â–ª It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in
/Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than
login items).
â–ª Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all fonts other than those
in /System/Library/Fonts .
â–ª Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches
normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a
user ID number such as 501.
â–ª Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables any Login Items.

Taken together, these changes can work around issues caused by software or
directory damage on the startup volume.

Some features don't work in Safe Mode

Safe Mode can be useful for troubleshooting. However, certain Mac OS X
features do not work when you are started up in Safe Mode. For example, you
can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use an AirPort card, use some
audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem.

hehe

that should read

/system/library/startupItems/metadata

Never, ever, move anything in /System.

That would be very interesting, since Entourage itself isn't even
affected by the 11.1.1 update, which AFAICT, applies to only the
following 6 apps/files: [...]

Are you sure?
The "documentation" of this update is a little bitt, uhmmm, *tiny* :)
All it says before installing is, that there would be several fixes
according to several applications.

The entourage application itself is not touched, but some of the supporting
libraries that entourage uses are updated. I don't know for sure whether or
not these updates cause any change to the way that entourage owrks, but it
is a possibility.

In rereading the thread, I guess I was wrong in saying that MacBU has
acknowledged this as a bug. Hopefully a fix is in the works though.
Interesting that safe mode fixes the problem. That would suggest some
sort of interaction issue exposed by Tiger. Since safe mode disables
all non apple installed fonts and startup items, it would seem to me
that the problem is either with a font (which could be possible since
MS installs fonts used in it's programs, but i think this is less
likely), with some startup item that we (the people with the problem)
have installed that others don't, or a kernal extension. The only
startup items that load for me that aren't pre-installed are: Cisco
VPN, NetBarrier, NetUpdate, and VirtualPCOSServices. Finally the only
extensions i have which don't have a modified date of March 26/27 2005
(this is the mod date for all things tiger) are:
Adaptec290X-2930.kext
ATTOExpressPCIPlus.kext
HotSync Classic Seize.kext
CiscoVPN.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
System.kext
IPFirewall.kext
KensingtonMouseDriver.kext
Adaptec39160.kext

The only commonality between the startup items and extensions is VPN so
maybe this causing a problem? This is pure speculation but it's the
most "network related" item in the list. However, both the VPN and
NetBarrier have been updated to the Tiger compatible versions. Hope
this info helps.

You may want to update Macintouch, who've just published your earlier

This is a strange problem. I seem to have fixed the problem on my G4
powerbook by removing every trace of "Little Snitch" while doing the
same on the G5 doesn't help. Does anyone else have the problem on a G4
running "Little Snitch"??

I did, sorry about the confusion. Hopefully the exposure on Macintouch
will help get this issue resolved.

I removed this two files

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Registration Cache 11

and now it seems that the attachments are not any more corrupted. I
have Tiger 10.4.1. Try. You will need to reregister. I trashed also the
invisible file

HD/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/OfficePID

Thanks for trying

no it's not a Norton issue...I never use any of their crap and still
have the issue...good thought though

This issue is bloody absurd. It has to be rectified immediately. No
attachments .... WTF? Im having the exact same issue... bloody shame.

I seem to have some success in sending attachments when Net Monitor is
not running (I normally have it start as a login intem and running in
the menu bar). I need to test this more fully but can anyone else
verify this? I am running Net Monitor v. 3.8.2 BTW.

Just a note. After sending an attachment with Entourage (which of
course get corrupted!) and after a while I shot down the computer, when
I turn on the computer in my trash can I found a Recovered Files folder
inside which there is a SendMail folder sometimes empty, sometimes with
a copy of the attachments (non corrupted). I am inclined to think that
the problem is in Tiger (SendMail?), but I am not familiar with the
complications of a OS. We need to find a solutions.

Thanks.

I am running Little Snitch on a PB AL 15" but strongly doubt that
Little Snitch could be causing corruption. If it were, it would affect
all outbound packets, not just attachments to Entourage. It would
affect attachments to http uploads, ftp uploads, etc. No such
corruption via the other modes.

I will disable Little Snitch and report back if it resolves the problem.

Kevin,

I am convinced it is not simply little snitch causing the problem.
That said on my G4 when its installed i have corrupt attachments - as
soon as i uninstall - it works again. Unfortunately the same cannot be
said for the dual G5 - whether LS is there or not does not solve the
corruption problem.

I¹ve encountered the corrupt attachment problem too. Now I send files
through Mail but use Entourage for everything else.

After reading the thread, particularly the finding that attachments go
through without corruption in Safe Mode, I wonder if Stuffit¹s engine could
play a role in the trouble. I can¹t reboot just now, but perhaps someone can
check if Stuffit Is it blocked from loading in Safe Mode. If it is, perhaps
a good test would be to manually prevent its loading during a normal reboot,
then see if a sent attachment is still corrupted. Maybe there's background
involvment with a compression engine.

Just a guess about something to look into ...

I'm pretty surprised that Microsoft is not jumping through hoops to get
a patch out for this problem. If this were Outlook on Windows then I
assure you we'd be seeing more activity from MS as well as public
pronouncements about the issue. Not being able to send attachments
reliably makes Entourage useless for me and I just recently switched
from a PC laptop to a Powerbook with Tiger installed. Not a very
pleasant switcher story for sure.

The problem seems intermitent for some on Tiger but all I know is that
the problem doesn't exist at all on my wife's iMac G5 running Panther.
But having the problem even some of the time means you can't trust
Entourage to send the files properly. It would be like giving Fedex
your documents and then having them arrive all mangled. You'd stop
using Fedex pretty quickly.

So MS, you got me with all your marketing about how great Entourage is
and I took the plunge. If this problem goes on without a fix for a few
more weeks, I'll will have to dump Entourage and convert to Apple Mail
perhaps to never return. At this point I can't recommend Office Mac to
any people that ask me when they see the Powerbook.

It seems very difficult to say that this is an Entourage problem: the
software works perfectly with Panther. I suspect that the problem has
to do with Tiger and the SendMail command. In particular the way it
encrypts mails. Certanly it is the combination of Entourage and Tiger.
And we are desperate in the middle...
