Create a look-up where source date is not alphanumeric

I'm trying to create a report that searches results from
another spreadsheet based on the information inputed and
gives me a result. The problem is, the source data cannot
be alphanumeric. So far, it seems that all of the look-
ups require the data to be alphanumeric. Any advice?

AFAIK none of the lookup functions require that source
data be alphanumeric. It would help if you posted some
more detailed information about what you're trying to
accomplish: examples of source data, its location
(worksheet name and cells), the current formula you're
using, and what it is returning.
