Created in 2000 and Opened in 2002 changes formatting?

I have created a document using Word 2000 and noticed that when it was opened
on another compurer running 2002 that the formatting was changed. Is there
anything I can do to make sure the document appears the same on later
editions of Word? Could it be the font I'm using? (Eras Medium ITC) I'd
rather not use PDFs, so is there a way to lock the format of the document?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
