CREATING JAPANESE TEXT GIFS AND JPEGS
The following instructions are based on using Microsoft Office 2000
suite, including Word 2000 and Frontpage 2000. The operating system I
used is Windows '98.
1. Insert a text box in a Word document.
2. Paste the required Japanese text into the text box.
3. If the text appears as a jumble of symbols, or as a row of little
rectangles, highlight the text and select MS Gothic font (this
recognizes Japanese characters – see
http://www.seanspot.com/jwrite/MS-IME/UseIME/jwrite-ime-view.htm for
further details).
4. Alter the text as you wish, e.g. font size/colour/fill, bold,
italic etc.
5. Format the text box – e.g. you may want to remove the border line.
6. Copy and paste the first text box into a second text box.
7. Move the cursor over the inner text box, and left click your mouse.
8. Copy and paste the inner text box into a new document in Frontpage
2000.
9. Save this new page. A window will appear, asking you to save the
text box as a gif (the window says something about 'embedding' the
image). You can change its name, and change it from a gif to a jpeg by
changing the name from ‘something.gif' to ‘something.jpeg'. Job done.
EDITING THE GIF/JPEG USING 'PAINT'(Start>programs>accessories>paint)
You could crop and size your new text gif/jpeg in Word, but you can do
more things if you use Paint. For example, you might want to join your
text to a photograph to form a single gif/jpeg. To couple two
gifs/jpegs in Paint, do the following:
1. Open the first image (Click File > Open)
2. Place your second image on top of the first, by clicking
edit>paste-from. You can move the second image around with the mouse
(left-click and hold)
3. Crop/size as necessary
