Custom Animation

I believe that it is possible in Powerpoint 2003 to set up a slide so that
you can click on a shape and animate objects in an order you choose by
clicking on the object as opposed to predetermining the order as was the case
in previous versions of powerpoint - please help!

You are correct. It is called "Triggers". Right-click your object, select
"Custom Animation", set the desired animation, click the dropdown arrow for
that animated object in the taskpane and click "Timing", click the
"Triggers" button and select "Start effect on click of..." and choose the
item in the dropdown. When in Slide Show mode and that object is clicked,
the desired object will animate.

I have a sample based on the Family Feud game that uses triggers that I can
send you if you wish.

In addition to Bill's game, there are a couple of Trigger related articles
on my site:

Hope one of these helps...
