#days does not equal start/finish days

Good morning,

I have a file I'm working with where there's a summary task that includes 3
sub-tasks. Two of these sub-tasks have a duration of 1 day and the 3rd has 6
days. However, on this 3rd task, the start date is 3/30/05 and the finish
date is 7/13/06, giving the summary task an overall 339 days of duration!
I've gone thru the project, selected all tasks and set all to start "as soon
as possible", as well as using the analysis bar to adjust dates. Short of
changing the finish date, or re-creating the file, is there something I can
do to correct this?

Many thanks, in advance...L

Hi Leslie

if task 3 has 6 in the duration column but the start & finish dates are as
you indicate this (in my experience) tends to indicate a problem with a
calendar as project is showing 6 days duration against the standard calendar
but has work happening outside of this. So things to check
1) is there a task calendar applied to the task - task information /
advanced tab - ensure calendar says "NONE"
2) is there a resource assigned to this task - if so, check that they're
assigned at 100% (task information / resources tab)
3) if there is a resource also check their calendar - firstly their base
calendar and then their actual calendar - base calendar you can see in the
resource sheet, base calendar column, and the resource's calendar can be
found in resource information / working time tab (also check the resource
availability on the general tab)
4) if there is a resource assigned and all of the above is looking good,
have a look at task usage to see how the hours are distributed, if there is
a edit symbol in the indicators column (blue graph with a pencil) double
click on the resources name under the task name and set the work contour
back to flat

hopefully it will be one of these .. please let us know how you get on

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your response! I checked all the options and it seems to be the
last one. It turns out that there were 5 consecutive 8hr work days, then
another 8 hrs on the last day. Turning that last day back to 0 corrected the
problem! :) Much thanks on teaching another way to troubleshoot a Project
file! Have a great day!
