default working time

Where is the default working time of a calendar defined?
How and where can I modify it?
Has it to be the same for all calendars?

I have the following "default working times": 8:00-12:00 and 13:00-17:00 and
would like to change that.

Hi,

Sorry, built in granite, can't be changed :-(
You can however change the "Standard" calendar in any project and throught
tools, organizer, copy it into Global.mpt such that it will be YOUR
"default" calendar
But it will insist on telling you it shows "nondefault working times"...

Hi MVB,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Also, you might like to see FAQ Item: 5. Default Working Hours

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Jan,
Thanks for your answer.
Still wondering why MS did it this way...

Hi Mike,
I don't agree that FAQ Item 5 helps. I even find it misleading for beginners
(like me).

Default Working Hours should not be confused with Default Start and End
times.
I am new to MS Project, but I have the habit of defining my deadlines and
other start/end dates at midnight. So I would be tempted to define DST=00:00
and DET=23:59. This way if I cannot meet my deadline on Friday, end of
working hours, I still can assign resources in the evening to finish it on
time.

Thanks.

Hi John,
Thanks, but I was speaking about "Default Working Time" and not about
"Default Start or End Date".

Sorry, as to *why* it was done this way you'll have to ask Bill Gates, but
the default working hours are engraved in granite, hard coded in the project
executable itself and cannot be changed. (You can't even go into the
registry and change them - I know, I've looked <grin>) You can create a
calendar with any hours you want and make it your normal main project
calendar, but anything other than M-F 0800-1200 and 1300-1700 will be
labeled "non-default" working hours by definition. Don't let it worry you
too much - it's only a label.

BTW, you're way ahead of the game since it appears you understand the
difference between "default working hours" and "default start and end
times", you'd be amazed at how many people confuse the two.
