deleted after opening

The story: I open Outlook. I select a new message from the
Inbox, open it and read it. I close the message by
clicking the x in the upper right corner. Now comes the
problem: for some reason, the original message is deleted.
It doesn't even move over to the Deleted Items folder. I
have looked for settings that need to be changed to stop
this but have been unsuccessful. Help!

View-Current View and uncheck "view unread messages only"
