deleting read only file

I downloaded a word file that was marked read only, I do not want the file anymore. I went into properties and unchecked the box, I still can not delete the file. I get an error message "cannot delete, access is denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and that file is not in use, please help...

This message has nothing to do with the file's being read-only; it has to do
with its being "in use." If you have closed the file and Word still thinks
it's open (and you're trying to delete it from the File Open dialog, it
could be because you are using the Preview view in that dialog. When a file
is being previewed, it is considered open.
