My company laptop has Office 2000, my wife's has Offixe XP.
The home PC has Office 97 and is the only one connected to
a printer.
Which Version should I update the home PC to. Is this a
free update.

You can upgrade to any legitimate version you can find
for sale. You should consider product support, service
packs, etc... See here for a list of support dates.
