I would like to show 2 slides on one screen at the same time...so as to
compare and contrast them for a class.

Is this to be done during a presentation or while editing?
If it is while editing, you will want to use the Windows menu tool (shown
along the top of the PowerPoint screen). Open both of the presentations and
then use the 'arrange all' command under the Windows tools.

If it is during a presentation, does it have to be actual slides or can it
be pictures of the slides?
Just select one of the slides and copy it (ctl+c). Then goto the slide to
display both, and select Edit Paste Special and select one of the graphic
formats (I find PNGs work well for me). Repeat for the second slide.
