Dissertation Page Number Problems

M

Martha Bowes

I have a five chapter dissertation. I need to number the first page of each
chapter bottom/center, and subsequent pages top/right. Page numbering from
chapter to chapter is consecutive. How do I format the numbering of the
first page differently while still connecting the sections for purposes of
consecutive numbering, and how do I keep it from showing up the first page
as number one, and the rest as all page 2s!?

If you have a shaky grasp of Word's page numbering, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm.

What you need here is section breaks between chapters. Before inserting the
breaks, however, do the following:

1. On the first page of your document, View | Header and Footer.

2. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the Insert Page Number button to
insert your page number. Press Ctrl+R to right align it.

3. Click the Page Setup button and check the box for "Different first page."
This will give you a separate First Page Header and First Page Footer.

4. You should be in the First Page Header. Click the Switch Between Header
and Footer button to get to the First Page Footer.

5. Click the Insert Page Number button to insert the page number. Press
Ctrl+E to center it.

Now insert your section breaks (Next Page or Odd Page as you prefer).
