Document being used, do you want to make a copy?

When I open a WORD document I have saved, I get the
message about it being used by: "c\:..\'name of doc'.doc
is being used by (who computer is register to). Do you
want to make a copy?"

How do I prevent this message appearing each time I open
a saved document?

Also, I use Office 97 and Microsoft no longer supports
this program. Are there any patches I should use, and
where can I obtain them now? I'm using WIN XP. Thank
you!
