Document Imaging - Office 2003 / XP Compatibility?

I have sent a .mdi file created with Office 2003 Document Imaging
printer driver to a colleague who has Office XP. When he tries to open
the file, he gets a "not a valid Microsoft document imaging file" message.

Are the two versions compatible?

Thanks, at least I'm not going insane.

I saved it as a tif file (15k to 754k!) and, although I can insert and
view it into a Word 2003 document, it won't open in any of the image
tools I use (PhotoShop, PaintShop).

Is there something weird about the tif files this thing generates?

I suppose type of compression used may have an effect. Remember that
TIFF is for a group of file types and there a lot of variables that can
be used, rendering some programs to not recognize the file format. Look
in Tools, Options and then the Anotations and Compression tabs for
likely places to break the ability to open in the other image editors.
