Document not being dispalyed

When I open a document that has been sent to me and has
been saved to computer, none of the contents are
displayed. If I do a print preview, I can see everything.
I have uninstalled/re-installed,
applied all service packs, and replaced the normal.dot
template.
Any ideas?

Which version of Word are we discussing? Have you tried
looking at the file in all the different views (normal,
print layout, outline)? Does it display in any of them?
which one(s)?

have you activated all the checkboxes for "non-printing
characters" in Tools/Options/View? And what's the setting
here for "Picture placeholders" on your machine?
