Document not registered-MADDENING!

Okay, first off, not a newb. Secondly, searched Google/Groups/TechNet
Forums, et al-no joy. Lots of inquiries-no solutions that work. Thirdly,
this problem on my system is not now, and has never been, associated
with ANY worm/trojan/virus, and, appears to be related to the
installation of the XPSP2 since I never had these issues before:

ISSUE #1: This document could not be registered...no copy/paste;
ISSUE #2: OL; Word is not my e-mail editor, yada, yada, yada.

I am using (or attempting to use) Office Professional Edition 2003, for
which I paid a lot of money. I bought this after Office XP threw up the
same problems. I formatted/reinstalled the OS and SP2 thinking that
might help. It did not. I did the reg change thing where the errors are
supposed to go away if you delete the Word/Data reg key. No help. I
uninstalled/reinstalled my Office programs (tried both Office XP and
Office Pro 2003) 2x. No help. I reinstalled SP2. No help. WTF?!?!

In perusing all of the articles/threads both in these groups and
everywhere on the net, it appeared that the solution was to reinstall
SP2, however, having done that and still receiving the above errors, I
am at a loss to understand. Listen up, MS! How is this problem solved?
We pay tons of money to purchase/use your s/w and many of us need Office
for business purposes on their home PC's, as is my case. I CANNOT
BELIEVE that a SP would render this expensive s/w useless! UNIMAGINABLE!
I cannot believe that I have to go thru all of these hoops, including a
format, which then takes days to re-configure all of my settings, e.g.,
services, tweaks, firewall, etc. AND THIS STILL DOESN'T WORK!!! I cannot
believe that I cannot copy/paste my resume, from my documents, to a job
site. I cannot believe that I cannot use OL to send RTF e-mails even tho
this Office program is registered as the default e-mail editor.

The other solution was to remove SP2. Cannot do that as I also purchased
a MS wireless kb/mouse combo ($100+) and that needs SP2 installed to
function. This is freakin unbelievable! What am I missing here? I also
do not believe that it is possible that MS is ignoring these issues and
that there is no solution. I have tried everything I've read to resolve
it but nothing is working. How is that possible? What is MS doing about
this and/or is there any other resolution which I have overlooked? Has
anyone else successfully resolved this issue sans all of the above which
I have already done?

AAARRRGGGHHH! I am mad as Hell about this.

your unique problem(s) to them:

With all due respect, Carey, this problem is not "unique" to me. If you
type the words, "This document could not be registered" into Google you
will see that there are myriad users with this same "unique" situation,
and, I read all of the available information in order to fix this,
including the knowledge base which does not succintly address this.

Having spent over $500 thus far on "Office" s/w, I should now pay, what,
$35/hr to MS to speak with them to fix issues which did not previously
exist as I have owned both Office XP and Office Pro 2003 for at least 2-
3 years and they worked before with no issues. Are you implying that
something "unique" happened on my system post SP2 that did not happen to
other users of this combination of s/w? Are you suggesting that I should
have to pay MS additional $$$ to get their s/w to work? Trust me, I have
no computer issues related to Norton, spyware/scumware/malware, etc.,
and this machine is locked down against the WMF exploits, virus/trojans
and all other forms of nasties. I do not surf the web except to tech
ngs/forums, I do not d/l or share music, do not use P2P, do not do
movies/pictures, etc., therefore, the usual problems one would find with
the clueless newbies (no offense intended to the less technical crowd)
do not apply to me. I practice safe-hex, subscribe to and read the GRC
ngs everyday and am aware of all of the "situations" which could occur
and have taken all precautions against them. My point being that I'm not
the usual/casual user. This is strictly a business machine in my home
and I am the sole user.

That I should have to pay MS to find a solution to their problem is
absolutely ridiculous. Everything worked before SP2. I didn't write/code
SP2, MS did that. If they write code which hoses a system, I should not
have to fork out $$$ to get it fixed. In the 7+ years I have been using
a computer (Win98, WinMe, WinXP, etc), I have NEVER had to call for tech
support as I have always armed myself with enough knowledge, or knew how
to find it, to fix my own problems. Short of spending a few hours on the
phone with MS, do you have any other lucid suggestions?

It's difficult to troubleshoot your issues since I
have not experienced what you are experiencing
and I'm running the same setup as you. That's why
I suggested contacting Microsoft.

Perhaps someone else who experienced your problem
and learned how to solve it will post a response.
Keep checking back....

Fair enuf, so, let's try something that should be up an MVP's alley:

Part Deux of my problems with OfficePro2003 is Outlook. It's configured
correctly and I can receive e-mail, however, despite the fact that I
have checked "Use MS Word2003 to (edit e-mail messages)and (to read Rich
Text e-mail messages), that checkbox keeps unticking itself and when I
attempt to do an e-mail, I get the following (quote):

"MS Word is set to be your e-mail editor. However, Word is unavailable,
not installed (it is or I couldn't use it, could I?), or is not the same
version as Outlook (how is that possible if I installed OL from the same
CD from which I installed Word after a format?). The Outlook e-mail
editor will be used instead;" (what editor would that be, exactly, if
not Word?). Now, when I compose an e-mail and get that message and click
ok, I can still compose the e-mail, and, it does format in Rich Text (as
evidenced by the blue font I use to compose) and it does go out in the
correct formatting and is saved in the correct format in my sent items
folder.

Any clues as to this cryptic idiocy?

You receive the error message "Word is unavailable, not installed,
or is not the same version as Outlook" when you try to create,
to edit, or to reply to an e-mail message in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906307/en-us

You might try the following:

Launch Microsoft Word and from the Toolbar select:
Help > Detect and Repair...

Afterward, visit the Office Update web site and
download all the available recommended updates.

Office Update

Afterward, run a Check Disk.

Read this before I posted and this info is as useless as tits on a bull
(pardon me) as none of that addresses the situation in a manner which
corrects the problem. If you read all of this nonsense it's the standard
MS speak; i.e., uninstall/reinstall, yada, yada, yada. Been There-Done
That. And, this further fortifies for me that MS screwed up big time
with SP2. Go look at the article on all of the s/w which "behaves
differently" after a SP2 install. Should all of that s/w behave
differently after a SP installation? Shame on MS.
You might try the following:

Launch Microsoft Word and from the Toolbar select:
Help > Detect and Repair...

Also Been Here-Did This. All that does is put icons back on a desktop.

Do any of the updates correct SP2 installation problems? From what I
read, of which very little was available, the short answer is no. If I
saw a sentence that said, "Corrects Office problems after installation
of SP2," I might consider that, however, I have enuf issues with a clean
install of OfficePro 2003 without dealing with the ramifications of yet
another service pack. We can't even fix the first service pack install!

Another BTDT. No joy, so, while I do appreciate your efforts, you can
see that I have tried all of the recommendations, as I mentioned
previously, to no avail. I am convinced that SP2 hosed my system and
until someone convinces me otherwise, that's my story and I'm stickin to
it. Gosh, I can't wait 'til Vista hits the market. I understand they
found critical issues in IE within 15 minutes of its release. BLECH!

SP2 runs fine and would not be the root cause
of the issues you are having.

One work around for not being able to copy/paste the contents of your
resume from Word is the print your resume as a PDF or MDI you can then
copy and paste the contents to a text file. You will have to do some
formatting, but at least you will have a text version of your resume
available.

Also, after you reformatted your machine and did the reinstall, did you
carry any settings over from your previous install or start 100% clean
with your profile? If you carried parts of your profile over you might
have carried the settings that are annoying you now by mistake
(excluding Favorites, My Documents, and Start Menu).

What happens if you create a new user on your machine and attempt to
use/run Outlook from there?

I have Adobe Creator 5.05 on this boxen and I assume you're suggesting
that I convert the .doc into a .pdf and then I'll have to format the
..pdf version? That will work for the resume but what happens to future
Word docs?

I did a clean install from scratch. Formatted the hd, deleted
partitions, installed XP then XPSP2 then OfficePro 2003. Saved my FF
favs onto floppy and imported them into new setup.
What happens if you create a new user on your machine and attempt to
use/run Outlook from there?

OL now appears tamed since I unchecked "Use...as default e-mail editor"
as I can now open New/Message to compose (I think, lemme check
again...); Yepper, no error like before. My problem is that somewhere in
the reg there must be some corrupted Word key despite my best effort to
find/fix it with my arsenal of tools. I can open Word, type, save &
close and no problem. The issue arises when I go back and open that same
document I just created and I get the "Document not registered" error
and I cannot copy/paste from that document. Does that make any sense? As
a final effort I reinstalled Office over the existing installation, ran
detect/repair, blah, blah, blah. No joy.

"This document cannot be registered"

Yep, that was another one of the things I tried, however, when I type
that command I get" "For information on usage & command line parameters,
see setup.htm." I typed it exactly as it appeared inserting a space
between "setup" and the "/Y" switch. Again, no joy. Still maddening, but
thanks for the suggestion.

I don't encounter this issue either but you might try unregistering
Word and registering it. The following commands are similar to using
the setup /y switch as the /regserver switch will force the recreation
of the Registry entries for Word.

Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /unregserver
winword /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.

I just started having the same issue after I tried to "optimize" my
system by setting a lot of the services to "manual" startup. It turns
out the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" service is needed by a few
things, after setting this service back to automatic the error message
no longer happens.

Double check your services and see "DCOM SErver Process Launcher" is
started.
