Documents I don't set as, opening as read-only?

Working on a Word doc, adding comments as tracked changes. Send it back to
the person who created the document, and when the person tries to open it, it
will only open as read-only.

I don't have any permissions set in Word to restrict/protect the document,
and permissions on the file side are open too. Help offers me no useful
information.

Any ideas? Anyone?
