Don't use alt left click to turn on research pane in Word 2003

It is extremely frustrating to try selecting a column of text using the alt
key and left mouse button to select the text and not being able to because
somebody decided to use alt click to activate the research pane.
The research pane comes up for alt and left or right click. The research
pane is of little value to me but being able to select a column of text is
very important. I feel that alt right click is an acceptable way to activate
the research pane but not the same key sequence as for selecting a column of
text.

Hi HarryLaL,

I can't offer any help on this but if it makes you feel better, I agree. The
un-customizable Alt+Click is rather an irritant - I probably get an unwanted
Research Pane at least ten times a day. I imagine it will be changed in Word
12.

I imagine it will be changed in Word 12.

I wouldn't bet too much money on it. An alternative is Shift+RightClick.
Haven't gotten used to that either (keep looking it up), and the Research
pane pops up a lot because I use Alt-key shortcuts often with the right hand
on the mouse, and am admittedly a bit clumsy.

BTW, while trying I just noticed that Ctrl+RightClick moves the Selection to
where you click.
Hope I won't confuse that with Shift+RightClick too often...

Regards,
Klaus

That is exactly my problem Klaus - using the Alt key with my left hand and
not releasing it quickly enough while my right hand on the mouse. I don't
have a problem getting the research pane when I want it - I just have a
problem with it popping up when I don't want it.

Possibly it is supposition on my part but I kind of thought that the task
pane would wither and die with the advent of the new UI in Office 12. Of
course that doesn't mean that the Alt+Click shortcut won't do some
equivalent and be equally un-customizanle; time will tell.

After fighting with the research task pane for years, I finally found out how to disable it.

From Word, press Alt-F11 to open the VB Editor.

Press Ctrl-G to open the Immediate Window.

Type this line and press Enter:

Application.CommandBars("Research").Enabled = False
