double clicking office documents opens empty program

any document I open (desktop or explorer) by double click opens the program
empty. the program opens slowly on top of this. I uninstalled AV and Firewall
to narrow it down but no luck. I reinstalled and repaired with no luck either.

any hints?

I had what sounds like a similar problem: I'm on Office 2003, and anytime I
tried to open an Office doc from within an Explorer window it took 1.5
minutes. Often it first opened just the shell and took awhile to get the rest
of the doc. I run Norton AV. The Symantec tech said to turn off the Office
plug in. That fixed it.
