Downward compatibility

Why is it that Publisher 97 files cannot be opened in
Publisher 2002? All other Office apps can open files from
older versions.

If I install Publisher 97 on my PC which already has
Publisher 2002 installed, I can only use one. The older
version "wipes" out the newer, preventing me from
switching from one version to the other which would allow
me to open my old files in '97 and later use 2002 to make
new documents. What gives?

There no reason why you can't use both versions. I can use 2000, 2002, and
2003 all at the same time. Are you installing them in separate directories?

As for not being able to open 97 in 2002, are you running Norton anti-virus?

You'd have to store the 97 documents in a separate folder so 2002 will not access
them. If all your documents are in a common folder, 2002 will be the proprietary
application. It is better to install 97 in a separate folder as well.

We are not running Norton. 97 files just will not open in
2002. I don't understand why. I can try to install 97
into a separate directory and see if both programs can be
run on one machine.

I don't have 97. If you're willing, send me one of the files made in 97 and
let me see if I can open it. Just curious........

If you do, send it to jl dot paules at gmail dot com.
