Dreaded .lck files

Pat Loftus

My computer crashed but I had backed up my FrontPage 2002
web site on a CD-RW. When attempting to rebuild I learned
about the .lck files. But now while in FrontPage every
time I make a move (open, close, save etc.) the
service.lck keeps coming back, apparently preventing me
from publishing (uploading). I have read archives, even
un-installed and re-installed. How do I kill this .lck
generation??? I am running ME. Thanks to anyone who can
help, I am at my wits end. Pat Loftus

First remove the read only attributes from all files / folders copied from the CD to the hard disc
Then find and delete any *.web files and the service.lck file

Stefan, I appreciate your reply to my inquiry. I have
repeatedly deleted the service.lck file but as I related
it keeps popping back as I work in FrontPage. I have
looked but I do not see any .web files in the file list.
I downloaded David's CROA and have used it successfully
(Thanks David!) but this issue with the .lck is driving me
nuts. It almost acts like some kind of virus that keeps
generating the .lck file in _vti_pvt. Again, thanks to
anyone who can assist....Pat Loftus

The service.lck file is suppose to be there. It's job is to control
concurrent access the meta data of FP.

Once you user CORA and deleted the service .lck file you should be able to
open the web in FPand from there publish it to another location.

1. Copy the web to a temp location.
2. Use CORA to remove the read attributes
3. Delete service.lck
4 Oepn the web and publish to the final location
5. Delete the temporary web site.

Thanks to Stefan, David and Mike for your comments. I
still don't understand the comment that this service.lck
file is "supposed to be there" yet the instructions say to
delete it. But I downloaded and used David Crowell's CROA
and was then able to upload my site changes so that is an
improvement from where I was.
Thanks again to you guys for making the effort to help a
novice.

In Windows Explorer Tools Folder Options View
- make sure you have it set to not hide known, system files
