DropDown Menus that Cross Frames

I am looking for some free javascript that I can use that gives me a dropdown
that crosses frames. Does anyone know where I can get one.

thanks for your help.

There is no practical way to do this.

There are impractical ways, but it would be much simpler to get rid of the
frames. Why are you using them?

Why am I using frames, because I know of no other way of accomplishing what I
need which is a contents menu where when clicking on the link it doesn't open
another window. My customer has many web applications open and could
potentially have 12 windows open, and do not want to cause additional windows
for our Online Reference Tool. If there is a better solution, please please
tell me.

Thanks.

Hi Lisa,

That example is a Java applet which is a bad choice these days as Java is
not automatically available on most modern PCs so a lot of users won't be
able to navigate your site. A javascript drop down menu will never be able
to accomplish this frame crossing - that's a limitation of browser
functionality rather than programmers. I think Murray has the best
suggestion of finding a way to drop frames, if it's just a case of not
wanting links opening in new windows that would be easy to accomplish - why
not post up the url to your site and we should be able to come up with some
suggestions for you.

Cheers,
Jon

Its an internal company site so I can't post it. But I can maybe give you a
synopis that will hopefully give you a clear picture.

This web tool that I am creating is an Online Reference tool. So there are
3 main topics which are our business segments so lets say, Segment 1, Segment
2, and Segment 3, then there is a 2nd level topic (Charts, Directory, State
Specific Information). Then beneat those 2nd level there is a third, which
either an actual link to the information (which would open on the right
frame) or possiblly another level which would then have links to a htm
document

Segment
Charts
Auto Chart
Chart 1
Chart 2
Home Chart
Dwelling Chart
Chart 1
Chart 2
Directory
Home Directory
Dwelling Directory

Segment 2
Charts
Auto Chart
Chart 1
Chart 2
Home Chart
Dwelling Chart
Chart 1
Chart 2
And these would all expand, the problem i was having that the names of some
of the charts were so long that I would expand the left frame to almost half
the screen.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for your help.

Use frames. Relocate your drop-down so that it doesn't drop so far. Or use
a FORM list - which *WILL* cross the frame boundary.
