Duplication around graphics

I'm using Word 08 on my MacBook Pro, using OS 10.6.6. I'm editing a
book and adding pictures, dragging them onto the pages next to the
text. The book is about 230 pages long, and when I add pictures the
text next to them is duplicated. Whatever sentence is next to the
picture will be printed again after the picture. Is there anything I
can do to eliminate that?
