duration dates and subtasks

I am looking to create a subtask for a main task. After I input the duration
for the main task and proceed to input the sub-task, the dates chnage all
together and the main tasks duration is shorter than required. Please advice
on.

Hi Nancy,

Summary tasks (main tasks as you call them) take the duration from the tasks
(or subtasks if you like), from the start of the first subtasks to the
finish of the last one.
So it is of no use to input a duration for a task that will be a summary
task later on.

Hi

"main tasks" (commonly referred to as "summary tasks") are just that - they
summarise the tasks listed under them - their duration / start & finish
dates are calculated from the sub-tasks. Additionally, they can, but it is
not a good idea to, have resources put against them - basically just think
of them as headings.
