E-mail Mail Merge and Stationery

I'm having problems sending mail merged e-mails with any
sort of background. I find that the message arrives at a
PC running Outlook without a problem but if it's sent to
a PC running Outlook Express it just arrives as code.

The stationery used isn't one of the ones supplied by
Microsoft. I've tried two types.... in the form of an
HTML page or a word document.

Anything I can do to get round this?
