Earned Value with timephased Actuals Hrs worked + % complete of BC

Wim

I am puzzled on how I need to model correct Earned Value Rptg using
manually entry
(a) actuals hours worked (timephased) and
(b) % complete (of BCWS) in MS Project?

**** Case SetUp ****
Resource A (std cost = 2000 EUR/day)
Task A: Planned Work
= 5days=>PV 10000 EUR
Planned Start Task A: Mon 4/1/2010 (0800)
Planned Finish Task A: Fri 8/1/2010 (1700)

**** Actuals on Fri 8/1/2010 (1700) ****
Res A: Mon 4/1/2010 - 1d
Res A: Tue 5/1/2010 - 1d
% Complete (of BCWS) for Task A: 80%

**** Expected Earned value Figures on Fri 8/1/2010 (1700) ****
BCWS or PV: 10000 EUR
ACWP or AC: 4000 EUR
BCWP or EV: 8000 EUR

**** Problem Description ****
Get correct earned Value reporting using standard MSP functionalities.

**** What is the correct way to enter manually in MS Project both
(a) actuals hours worked and
(b) % complete of the BCWS ? ****
- What (custom) fields/ (custom) views/ (custom) tables need to be used?
- Any specific settings in Tools/Options that require doublechecking?

To obtain the "%Complete of BCWS" you are talking about Physical % Complete.
There is information about it in the help.

Here's the short version...
1. Costed resources loaded to all tasks.
2. for every task EV Method = Physical%Complete (insert the EV Method
column, change it there).
3. Baseline
4. Proper schedule status with proper Status date set.

So, if I have a baseline cost of 10000 Euros and I claim 20%
Physical%Complete, then BCWP = 2000EU.

Project will automatically calculate BCWS based on the Status Date
(Project/Project Information).

ACWP -- Make sure project isn NOT calculating ACWP.
Tools/Options/Calculations (tab). Also deselect the "Actual Costs spread to
the status date." It seems counter intuitive, but if it is NOT selected it
will spread ACWP from task [Actual Start] to [Actual Finish].... if it is
checked it will do exactly what is says....even if the status date is 31
DECEMBER 2015.

We enter ACWP (Actual Cost) on the Task Usage View. You can insert the
Actual Cost (and ACWP) rows by right clicking in the right side of that view
and selecting Details.
Set the timescale to match how you collect your actuals.

Dear Jim,
thanks a lot.
The manual entry of (a) Physical % Complete, (b) Timephased Actua
Hours and (c) Timephased Actual Costs brings us a major step forward
PV, AC and EV are calculated as expected. Hence all EV cost indicator
and EV schedule indicators are also correct. However, we identified tw
attention points.

1) There is no (automatic) roll up of Physical % Complete to summar
task and project summary level. As P%C was entered at the lowest level
the P%C field is "display only" (as expected) on summary task level
Unfortunately, P%C displays a blunt 0% at summary task level and projec
summary level. Are there any (VBA) ways (custom field?) to get
representative value in that (new) field?

2) The other point that confuses us is the EAC calculation at summar
task level and project summary level. Although the EAC calculation i
correct at the lowest level, we do not understand how MSP calculated EA
at summary task level and project summary level. Any explanation o
insight is highly welcome.

Thx again for your support
