email attachments that get corrupted when I send to other people

I am running Office XP 2003. When I send an email attachment the other person
can not read it. I believe I changed one of the email option setting by
mistake and have caused the problem. I used to be able to do send attachments
with no problem. If I us a web based mailing system I have no problem sending
the attachments. The problem is within Outlook. The attachments can be any
type ( .exl, .doc, .ppt. .pdf)
Is Outlook 2003 backwards compatible with other versions?
