Email through VPN

I have a Exchange 2000 server and clients accessing email through PPTP VPN.
The VPN connects fine and we are able to see map drives etc. But when the VPN
users access email through Outlook, which is setup to use MSExchange they are
only able to connect about 30% of the time. The other 70% Outlook prompts for
username, password, & domain; even when the information is entered manually
it will still not connect to email but map drives and other network functions
work properly still.

Has anyone experienced this and what can we do to resolve this issue? As a
quick fix the users use the OWA but would like to use the regular Outlook
Clients.
