emailing presentation

I've trying to find out when I get a powerpoint
presentation sent to me in email the attachment size is
181k, the presentation is only 15 slides but when I open
it and then save it locally to my hard drive it increases
in size form 181kb to 12MB. If I save it directly from the
email WITHOUT opening it first the size stays the same.

Any ideas from the gurus on why this would be happening?

What version of powerpoint are you using?

Does the presentation contain any pictures?
