Enabling & Disabling Toolbar Buttons and Menu Options

Is it possible to enable and disable the standard Word toolbar buttons and
menu option? ie, can I enable and disable the Save toolbar button, the Save
and Save As menu option?

You can completely remove the toolbar buttons and menu commands, saving this
customization in either the document or its attached template. Use Tools >
Customize and pay attention to the value you select for the Save In box.

You can change the state of a toolbar button or menu command but this
requires VBA.

You can create your own macros that intercept these commands, but do
nothing. This is also a VBA deal, but much simpler.
